Flange Guards – Types, Material and Benefits

What are Flange Guards?

Flange guards are protective devices that cover pipe flanges to prevent the leakage of materials. Fluoropolymer flange guards, because they are chemically inert, are often used where toxic or corrosive liquids or acids are being used. Sometimes flange guards are known by different names such as flange shields, flange covers or even pipe safety shields.

There are a number of reasons why a company might install flange guards including:

  • Safety reviews
  • Regulations
  • Insurance requirements
  • Hazardous area requirements
  • Company best practices

Types of Flange Guards

There are a number of different types of Fluoropolymer flange guard. These are made for different applications where the different types of Fluoropolymer (each with its own unique properties) provide a choice of products that will be suitable.

Types of flange guards:

  • PTFE (Teflon®) flange guards
  • ECTFE (Clear Teflon®) flange guards
  • FEP flange guards
  • ETFE flange guards
  • PVC flange guards – although these are not Fluoropolymer flange guards, they can provide a budget solution for low corrosion, pressure & temperature environments

Holscot’s specialisms are Fluoropolymer flange guards. PVC & steel flange guards can also be used in certain industrial applications. Holscot’s Northern Division, based in Leven, Fife, specialises in the manufacture of flange guards and have been flange cover suppliers for over 40 years.

Benefits of using Flange Guards

There are a number of benefits to using flange guards including preventing the leakage of harmful liquids. The general benefits include:

  • Prevention of leaks & preventing leaks from causing damage to property or injury to people
  • Avoiding the formation of mists
  • Indicating where there are leaks
  •

The benefits are usually specific to the material in question, however.

PTFE (Teflon®) Flange Guard Benefits:

  • Corrosion resistant
  • Non-permeable
  • Works at high temperatures (up to 235°C)
  • Useful for acids, caustics, solvents, fuels & oils

ECTFE (Clear Teflon®) Flange Guard Benefits:

  • Corrosion resistant
  • Transparent to enable inspection
  • Non-flammable

FEP Flange Guard Benefits:

  • Chemically resistant
  • Transparent
  • Easy-to-assemble
  • UV stable
  • Resistant to temperatures up to 150°C

ETFE Flange Guard Benefits:

  • Chemically resistant
  • Useful for acids, bases & oil
