Lift Me Off

Background

Following on from the work carried out with MT Aerospace in the development of Containment Bladders and Diaphragms in FEP, Holscot pushed forward with the development of these products for use with a variety of Space Propellants. Holscot completed several projects with manufacturers of Space Propulsion systems, some using Hydrogen Peroxide as the propellant.

In early 2020, Lift Me Off were in the process of developing their own range of tanks for CubeSat/Smallsat operations using Hydrogen Peroxide as the propellant, they became aware of the work Holscot had done in this field. Michel Poucet, the CEO of Lift Me Off, contacted Holscot to start a discussion to establish what Holscot could offer. Following a series of online video meetings, it was quickly established that a Holscot FEP bladder was exactly what would be needed.

Problem

The concept is a two-part bladder constructed from two FEP formings of exactly the same shape – most commonly dome shapes – joined at the equator using advanced welding techniques, which also acts as a means of location into the outer load bearing tank. To expel the contents, the upper part is collapsed into the lower part. Because the two parts are mirror images of each other, the upper part conforms exactly to the contours of the lower part achieving a near 100% expulsion rate.

Solution

Using FEP as the material of construction offers compatibility with Hydrogen Peroxide and protects the tank from chemical attack.

Fortunately, Holscot was able to use some existing tooling to be able to quickly create a trial FEP bladder of a suitable size for LMO to carry out some evaluation tests. Initial trials in 2020 showed real promise and assured LMO that this was the direction they should take. Further trials followed using other thicknesses of FEP as the parent material.

The cooperation between Holscot and LMO continued as new tanks were considered and new sizes of FEP bladder created. LMO have learned just how to get the best out of the Holscot FEP bladders and Holscot has been happy to work with LMO to achieve optimum results.
