Overall there are four divisions in the Holscot Group.  The Headquarters and primary manufacturing facility is in Grantham, UK.  Holscot Northern Division is located in Leven, Fife in Scotland, and handles the sales for Scotland and the North of England as well as being the manufacturing unit for Holscot FEP Flange Shields.  Holscot Europe in Breda, Netherlands is Holscot’s main sales office for mainland Europe whilst Holscot Deutschland in Ratingen Germany provides sales to the German market.   More details can be found here.

The experienced technical and production staff based in Grantham have developed the ability to work with the challenging properties of Fluoropolymers, developing in-house techniques for welding them and thermoforming them.  Our welding techniques deliver a virtually indiscernible weld which enables us to make very large diameter sleeves.  The vacuum forming facility gives us the ability to make custom made shapes, brought together we can now form and weld together bladders and diaphragms for space propulsion and other containment purposes.

The Holscot group Head Office is also the base for Quality Control, R&D, Engineering, Clean Room manufacturing & Warehousing as well as administrative duties are all housed at this location.

Teflon® is the Registered Trade name of DuPont de Nemours which covers their PTFE, FEP and PFA fluoroplastic products. PTFE was discovered by Roy Plunkett in 1938 as a by-product of the refrigeration process. For more details see our Glossary section.

Teflon (registered trade mark of Chemours, previously DuPont) is known for its non-stick properties. Teflon is a brand name for a type of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene. When applied as a coating on cookware and other surfaces, it creates a smooth and low-friction surface, which makes it non-stick.

 

FEP Tubing

 

The non-stick properties of Teflon come from its unique molecular structure. PTFE has a high density of fluorine atoms, which creates a strong bond with carbon atoms, resulting in a surface with very low surface energy. As a result, other materials have a hard time sticking to it, and food, oils, and other substances tend to slide off easily without sticking to the pan.

 

The way that all Fluoropolymer products, PTFE, FEP, PFA and, to a certain extent, ETFE, achieve their non-stick capability is that they shed a molecule of themselves every time something passes over them, so the surface will always have a tendency to wear away. This applies to all types of Fluoropolymers, including spray coatings. There will always be some element of adhesion. As a result, some items will continue to stick – particularly hot melt adhesives. It is always advisable to conduct tests.

 

Holscot does not manufacture PTFE products in general, but supplies a large assortment of products made of PFA, ETFE & FEP these are the melt processable versions of fluoropolymers.

 

FEP, is the abbreviated term for fluorinated ethylene propylene, a type of synthetic fluoropolymer similar to PTFE (Teflon). It shares some similarities with PTFE but also has some distinct characteristics that make it suitable for specific applications.  Like PTFE, FEP is known for its excellent non-stick properties. The non-stick properties of FEP are derived from its low coefficient of friction and its molecular structure, which includes a high density of fluorine atoms. This results in a surface with very low surface energy, making it difficult for other materials to adhere to it.

 

The key non-stick properties of FEP are:

1. Low Surface Energy: FEP has a lower surface energy compared to most materials, which means it repels other substances, such as oils, water, and adhesives. This makes it challenging for anything to stick to the FEP surface.

2. Non-Wetting: FEP exhibits non-wetting behavior, meaning liquids tend to bead up and roll off its surface rather than spreading out or wetting the material.

3. Chemical Inertness: FEP is highly chemically inert, which means it is resistant to chemical attack and does not react with most substances. This property is beneficial in applications where the material is exposed to harsh chemicals or corrosive environments.

4. Heat Resistance: FEP has good thermal stability and can withstand a wide range of temperatures. It retains its non-stick properties at both high and low temperatures, making it suitable for various applications.

 

Due to these non-stick properties, FEP is commonly used in various industrial and commercial applications, including:

– Release liners: FEP is used as a release liner for adhesives and other sticky materials, preventing them from sticking to each other during storage and transportation.

– Electrical insulation: FEP’s electrical insulation properties, combined with its non-stick properties, make it suitable for applications in the electronics and electrical industries.

– Chemical processing equipment: FEP’s chemical inertness and non-stick properties make it suitable for lining tanks, pipes, and other equipment used in chemical processing.

Overall, FEP’s non-stick properties make it a versatile material used in various industries and applications where low friction, chemical resistance, and non-stick surfaces are required.

FEP, PFA, PTFE all have FDA approval. PTFE has been used extensively inside the human body

Holscot can extrude in FEP, ETFE and PFA in diameters from 3mm to 400mm and thicknesses from 0.1mm to 3mm.

Working with highly experienced Masterbatchers, Holscot can extrude tubing in virtually any colour. A minimum extrusion run is required.

Only one resin is available which is truly conductive and that is PFA. It is possible for Holscot to extrude this against a minimum production run

Again this can be considered against a minimum production run for special applications and designs.

With 97% UV transmissivity and a resistance to the high temperature experienced at the end of the lamps FEP is the material of choice for long-life white lights and UV insect killing lamps.

Insect Light Traps

FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene) is a type of fluoropolymer that is commonly used for lamp protection in various applications.

There are several reasons why FEP is preferred for this purpose:

  • Transparency: FEP has excellent optical clarity, allowing it to transmit light with minimal distortion. This transparency makes it an ideal material for lamp protection since it does not interfere with the light output of the lamp.
  • UV Resistance: FEP is resistant to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is particularly important when protecting lamps that emit UV light. It ensures that the FEP material itself does not degrade when exposed to the UV emissions.
  • Electrical Insulation: FEP is an excellent electrical insulator, which is important when using lamps that generate heat and have electrical components. It helps prevent electrical shorts and ensures safe operation.
  • Flexibility and Durability: FEP is flexible and can be formed into different shapes, providing versatility in lamp protection applications. Additionally, it is a durable material, resistant to physical wear and tear.
  • Chemical Resistance: FEP is highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including acids, bases, and solvents. This property makes it suitable for protecting lamps in environments where exposure to potentially corrosive substances is a concern.
  • Temperature Resistance: FEP has a high operating temperature range, typically from -200°C to +204°C (-328°F to +400°F). This means it can withstand the heat generated by lamps without deforming or degrading, ensuring long-term protection.
  • Non-Stick Properties: FEP is non-stick and has a low coefficient of friction. This characteristic makes it easy to clean and reduces the accumulation of dust, dirt, and other contaminants on the lamp surface.

Due to these properties, FEP is commonly used as a protective cover for lamps in various industries, including lighting, medical equipment, aerospace, and more. Whether it’s protecting fluorescent tubes, UV lamps, or other types of lighting elements, FEP offers reliable and efficient lamp protection.

Yes. The Circular Insect Killing Lamps can be protected with FEP.It is a difficult task but Holscot carries out the work within the group.

Yes. FEP is resistant to temperatures up to 150 deg C

A percentage of each batch of lamps Holscot covers are subjected to a 4m drop test whereby the covered lamp is dropped from a height of 4m onto concrete to ensure all the glass is contained.

Holscot’s customers can choose between sending their free issue lamps to Holscot’s headquarters in Grantham, UK, where they are covered, repacked and returned, our usual lead-time for this service is 5-10 days (depending on demand).  Holscot have been covering lamps (including fluorescent lamps) with UV stable FEP fluoropolymer coverings since the 1990’s.  All Holscot covered lamps are tested in accordance with the IEC 61549. They are subjected to a 4m drop test to ensure all fragments are retained.

Alternatively, for customers in more distant locations, where this is not a cost effective or practical solution, Holscot can supply rolls of FEP heat shrinkable layflat sleeving (typically 100-200m to a roll) for customers to fit themselves.  This removes the cost of transportation and reduces your stock holding inventory.  We ship many km of this material worldwide and often have stock on hand to supply, so lead-time (depending on volume) could be less than 4 weeks.

To cover a lamp yourself you would need to cut the FEP fluoropolymer sleeve to length, then slide this over the lamp, the lamp then needs to be exposed to a heat source to shrink down the sleeving onto the lamp surface, finally each end will require a trimming before being repacked for onward shipment.  The shrinking down heat source can be anything from a simple heat gun, tunnel oven or a steam chamber. Each lamp which has an FEP covering is fitted with a band at one end so that they can be identified from a distance as being protected.

It depends on the size. Anywhere between 30 and 50%. The range of diameters which are fitted by each size of sleeve can be seen at the Heat Shrinkable Sleeving section here. It has been designed so that, even at the smallest diameter, the fit is tight once the sleeve is shrunk.

Shrinkage will begin at 100oC but Holscot recommends the use of more powerful hot air guns, such as the Leister Electron, which delivers up to 600oC. Full installation instructions can be found here.

FEP has a suggested maximum operating temperature of 150 deg C. PFA has a theoretical operating temperature in excess of 200 deg C. Bonded sleeves of either material have a maximum operating temperature of 150 deg C. The exception to this is extrusion/lamination rollers. More details of that application can be seen in the case histories section.

Yes. Holscot will provide DVDs and written installation instructions but, if more hands on help is needed, Holscot can send engineers to site anywhere in the world.

It is one of the most common uses for Holscot FEP and PFA sleeves to be fitted to bowed (banana) rolls. The techniques for fitting the sleeve need to be slightly adapted to account for the curved nature of the roll. Rubber covered bowed rollers are most usually covered although even some metallic bowed rollers can be covered using thicker gauge FEP sleeves to try to avoid the risk that the sleeve could be trapped in the gap between the segments

Customers need to advise the diameter of the roller to be fitted, the face length, what the roller is made from (if rubber please advise the type of rubber and the shore hardness) and the operating conditions.

Yes. Holscot can manufacture sleeves with diameters up to 1500 mm using their unique welding techniques which produce a seam which is barely discernible. This technique enables them to make the FEP sleeves for Drying Cylinders which are fitted on site whilst the cylinder is still in the machine.

Yes. In most cases, the non-stick surface provided by the FEP sleeve will prevent sticky substances such as coatings, adhesive and size from adhering to the cylinder surface. If there is any residual build up, it can be easily removed with water.

The time to fit a sleeve can vary from 30-60 minutes to upto 12 hours depending on the size, wall thickness, use of adhesive and conditions.  Please ask one of our experts if you want to know more about a specific sleeve.

In order for the installation to proceed as efficiently as possible, it is vital that the area is prepared before Holscot Engineers are on site. Access must be given including removal of felts and guards, provision of scaffolding if required and adequate lighting. Electrical supplies will be needed and the cylinder should be thoroughly cleaned. A full list of the necessary preparations will be issued.

It is not recommended that a doctor blade be used on a cylinder with a Holscot FEP sleeve surface. Indeed, it should not be necessary and should be removed completely to avoid the risk of accidental damage to the sleeve. If one must be used, it should have a PTFE tip on it.

This will depend on the operating temperature of the cylinder and the care exercised by the Mill staff. The higher the temperature, the shorter the lifespan. Typically sleeves in this application will last anything from 2-8 years.

Sometimes. Of course it depends on the nature of the damage. Surface cuts, if they do not actually go fully through the sleeve to the metal can be repaired by Holscot Engineers. For other cuts, Holscot can provide some self-adhesive PTFE tape to put over the split to stop it propagating. This is only a temporary repair until a new sleeve can be fitted

The initial concept was not air filled. This allows a much more simple structure – ideal for smaller projects such as sunrooms or greenhouses. The market place has led Holscot to incorporate an air pressurised option in some larger constructions. However, the advantage of the non pressured panels is that they arrive ready to fit requiring no special extra frame work.

 

The framework is normally aluminium. The ETFE is generally 0.2mm thick but can be up to 0.25mm and is welded together and shrunk over the frames. Rectangular frames are the norm but triangular, pentagonal, octagonal can all be accommodated. The result is a lightweight panel which can be fitted into wooden or metal structures with great ease.

No, it remains unaffected for an indeterminate time. ETFE allows UV through more effectively than glass.

Repair tape can be provided to patch small holes. Complete replacement panels can be easily inserted in the event of more major damage.

Holscot’s standard range includes Flange Shields to fit ASA150 and PN10/16 flanges but Non Standard Flanges can also be covered. All that is needed is to advise Holscot the diameter of the flanges and the overall width, measured when the flanges are bolted together.

The standard range of Holscot Flange Shields is heat shrinkable. So, once they are clipped into position, if they are exposed to high temperature, they will shrink tightly onto the rim of the flanges. Some customers choose to assist that shrinking process using a hot air gun; others rely on the temperature generated within the pipework on which the Holscot Flange Shield is situated. If not exposed to high temperature the Holscot Flange Shield can be removed and relocated. If required, Holscot can supply a NON heat shrinkable Flange Shield if removability is important.

Possibly. But if the tank is being made from new the normal procedure is to make the tank from the inside out by forming the liner onto a fabricated mandrel with the glass backing of the liner exposed which is subsequently overwrapped with a number of layers of GRP to complete a homogeneous layer.

That depends on the lining material. PVDF and ECTFE are seldom exposed to more than 100 deg C. Whilst FEP and PFA are both capable of resisting higher temperature, the adhesive used restricts the operating temperature to 150 deg C.

Generally speaking no. There will be no guarantee as to the condition of the steelwork after removal of the lining.

FEP and PFA can be supplied in thicknesses from 25 microns. FEP is available in a maximum thickness of 2.4mm. PFA can be supplied in thicknesses up to 6mm.

Yes. In thinner gauges white and red film are not uncommon but for the thicker gauges Holscot can incorporate a pigment into the extrusion of films from 0.25mm. Yellow, blue, red and even silver have been successfully produced.

Can Holscot weld the film to form larger width rolls?

Yes. The welding techniques that Holscot use are machine based and one of the first techniques devised at their inception and allow the fabrication of ultra wide rolls of Fluoropolymer film.

Yes. For 25 and 50 micron film, a corona discharge is used to disrupt the molecular structure of the polymer and provide a bondable surface. For thicker gauges, sodium based etching is used which gives a light brown hue to the film.

Yes. One of the first skills Holscot developed at their inception was to vacuum form FEP. As part of the project to develop a liner for water tanks for the International Space Station, Holscot successfully carried out the largest FEP vacuum forming ever attempted. Holscot have since carried out the same procedure with PFA.

Fragment retention lamps are essentially standard lamps which have been protected with an external FEP coating which prevents the glass from escaping in the event of breakage.

The aim of fragment retention sleeves is to provide a shatter resistant protection greater than the implosion force generated in the tube

IEC61549 (BS EN 61549) specifies that a fragment retention lamp must retain 100% of the glass from a breaking lamp when subjected to a horizontal impact from a height of 4 metres onto a concrete floor.

A successful fragment retention covering needs to pass the IEC61549 drop test at the end of the working life of the lamp. In addition the covering should also provide good thermal resistance and be non combustible.

Holscot FEP covers fulfil all these criteria.

Holscot have undertaken to have their FEP covered lamps tested by an Independent Testing House to this Standard and the results can be seen at our Downloads section.

FEP is the material of choice as there is no deterioration during the lifespan of the lamp – even Long Life lamps. It is completely unaffected by UV light and will not age, discolour or become brittle

FEP will endure temperatures up to 204 deg C, which is higher than the standard operating temperature of fluorescent lighting. This makes it even suitable for use in enclosed IP65 fittings

For each of the Holscot Protective Lamp Coverings production runs we make, a test sample is subjected to the 4m drop test specified in IEC 65149. Only after this test is performed are lights released and production continued. This sampling is carried out at regular intervals to ensure compliance to the Standard.
