Using the unsurpassed optical properties of ETFE, in thin gauges, to replace glass, has often been attempted. The many advantages of its use in Architectural Constructions has long been recognised and has been a familiar sight in such structures as the Eden Project and the Biejing Olympic Swimming Pool.
But the designs have been cumbersome and high on maintenance costs. The pillowed design relies on a constant air pressure being applied. So the search has been on for simpler, more easy maintenance alternatives. Some have shown promise and others have fallen by the wayside, due mainly to the complexity and therefore the cost, of supporting thin films to be used in direct contact with atmospheric weathering.
In a novel development, a patented modular panels system is now available from Holscot , (UK Patent Application 0905286.1). This allows double glazed panels in ETFE (treated or untreated) to be fitted as glazing to most applications. This novel concept opens up a wealth of new and exciting possible applicatons.
The first commercial application was completed in 2011. The project is a Greenhouse (supplied by Perrity Greenhouses) fitted with panels of ETFE. The greenhouse has been constructed in order to grow vegetables native to Thailand and provide supplies to Top Class Thai restaurants in London and elsewhere.
