Fluoroplastic Propellant Tanks

Fluroplastic-Containment-tanksIn the field of Space Propellant tanks, emphasis has recently become placed on the demisablity of the tanks – that is to say that, designers are looking for tanks which are capable of complete disintegration during re-entry and jettison. Current designs based on metallic constructions, fail to fulfil this criteria. Thus, more and more tank producers are looking towards 100% plastic tanks to reach this objective. Holscot is proud to say it is at the forefront of this research area.

Using experience gained from their 40 years providing fluoroplastic lined tanks and vessels to chemical and pharmaceutical companies worldwide, Holscot look towards the FEP laminate for the solution. The FEP laminate material has a woven fabric embedded into it. Constructing the tanks with the fabric on the outside of the fabrication, composite materials can be laid up on the surface to eventually form a fully homogeneous structure.

grp-supported-fuel-tanksMost commonly, the fabric in the FEP is a woven glass cloth but a carbon fibre backing can also be provided which lends itself more readily to a totally reinforced carbon fibre construction.

The techniques that Holscot bring to these constructions – such as welding and thermoforming – have been the cornerstones of Holscot’s expertise for over 40 years and enable constructions of any size to be possible. Using FEP as an internal liner also facilitates the use of a FEP diaphragm for encouraging complete expulsion of the propellant which can be attached to the liner itself.
